KARPATNAFTOCHIM Ltd. Environmental Сonsiderations

The company has been employing Environment Management System (EMS), a part of the general corporate management system, for the comprehensive approach to address the environmental issues arising from the business processes and compliance with environmental regulations.

EMS regulates the organization of environmental activities within structural subdivisions, determines the methodological and legal basis for activities ensuring the environment management system in accordance with the current environmental regulations of Ukraine, international standards of series ISO 14001:2015.

In 2018, KARPATNAFTOCHIM Ltd. obtained the Certificate of compliance with the international standard ISO 14001:2015 “Environment Management Systems. Requirements with Guidance for Use” valid for 3 years. In 2019 the company passed the first certification audit to confirm the current certificate.

The company carries out its business activities in accordance with permits for emissions of pollutants into the atmospheric air by stationary sources, and permits for special water use.

KARPATNAFTOCHIM Ltd. has been continuously operating gas and dust treatment facilities with efficiency of 99.5%.

The company draws water from the Chechva reservoir. 80% of drawn water is used for own needs, of which: for production needs – 89%, for service and drinking water supply – 11%; the remaining 20% of the drawn water is used for the needs of external companies.

The treatment industrial and domestic wastewater from production units, external companies and the city of Kalush takes place at the company treatment facilities (capacity – 81 thous.m³ per day, of which municipal wastewater – 60%). Previously, the old inefficient screen traps were replaced with the Huber automatic drum screw screens with an integrated waste flushing and compaction system.

Improving the performance of wastewater treatment facilities at the company is one of the most important factors for environmental enhancement, protecting the reservoirs from contamination by harmful substances.

Treatment facilities come out as a complex of biological and physico-chemical process of treatment of industrial and domestic wastewater produced not only by the company, but also the city of Kalush. KARPATNAFTOCHIM Ltd. is charged the environmental tax for its environmental impact.

The company operates a sanitary laboratory, which constantly monitors the impact of KARPATNAFTOCHIM Ltd. activities on the environment according to the environmental monitoring plans, measures the hazardous substances concentrations in the air of the work area and at the border of the sanitary protection area, in return waters of KARPATNAFTOCHIM Ltd. from discharges, in surface and groundwater, in soils at the waste disposal sites. Environmental experts regularly evaluate the environmental impact of the company activities.

The company has been constantly working towards improving existing technologies, developing measures to reduce the negative impact on the environment.

However, the main factor of company success is professional competence of personnel, strict observance of standards, reliable and mutually beneficial international cooperation.
